The majority of facilities on PTA are circa 1950s, from the Korean War era. They have no heating or air conditioning. In September it doesn't matter so much as the temperature is mild and comfortable. The doors to the facilities are missing up to several inches on the bottom letting in insects and rodents. Rats and mice were a problem. Some buildings do reek of rodent urine. The new shower building looks nice, but was built incorrectly so it sprays most of the water out of the stall onto the floor. The USO is the best building there and they do a great job of supporting the troops.

5 stars. Pet Friendly. Lots of Goats. Gated Community.
Living conditions - not optimal but a great bonding opportunity. Lots of wind. Lots of elevation… some loud noises from time to time..
Porta Potties are the only option of relieving yourself.. so recommend carrying wipes at all times.

Deployed to PTA in 1978 from Schofield (25th ID) with my unit for a month of training. First time back and was surprised to see the same quonset huts! Lots of memories here - live firing and maneuvering over the lava. Obviously new buildings and upgrades were added over the years but definitely a blast from the past to be back.

This is just the middle of no way if you going there to drop equipment don't go just by yourself No Taxies No Uber out there not even good phone service you feel like stuckd in the middle of desert. Make sure you have means of transport and point of contact there so they can help you to come back

Was there in 1974. Airlifted in from Schofield Barracks. I remember (Navy?) aircraft napalm bombing runs at night on a bombing range 20 miles away in the valley while Mauna Loa glowed brightly in the background. Surreal.

Daytime artillery missions were boring with lots of dust/ash everywhere. Barracks look the same as they do now.

Remember lots of kush being for sale in Kona.

Spent a lot of time there-8 months-over a 3 1/2 year period while stationed at Schofield Barracks with the 3/4 Cav. Good memories. 6000 feet above sea level. Gets pretty cold. Walking on lava rock. Hiking to the top of the mountain.

This place blows. But their pizza shop is good. The only thing that makes it bearable is your fellow servicemen.
