The course was fantastic and the instructors were very well educated and patient with the class questions. I retired from a career in law enforcement and some (low level) experience as a first responder. My only complaint is that I wish the class would have been longer. I doubt most would agree with me on that but we went into some fairly deep medical jargon, procedures and anatomy that I had to study extremely hard to stay up with the class. It’s a good thing to have to study hard and that is a reasonable expectation, though I don’t feel the time limit for the class offered enough time to gain a level of understanding in the EMS field. This last year I have poured myself into learning more as an EMT and I feel I am up to parr. However, having been through two police academies that were both just under six months in duration of five days a week study, I expected more when dealing with something as critical as emergency field medicine and pre-hospital treatment. I certainly didn’t expect mastery upon graduation from the course but was fairly shocked at the responsibility that was afforded such little time. In that regard, I found it disappointing. In speaking with other EMS I’ve now worked with, I have learned that all of them had a similar experience. Having been professionally trained as a career police officer and then federal agent, my expectations of the level of training was much higher than what was supplied due to the limited time afforded for the skills expected to perform. To produce a higher level of trainee post education requires a higher level of training than was given.
