It was a beautiful day to visit fort Atkinson Park. All the reenactors were dressed in full attire. We watch the lowering of the flag at 4:00 p.m. and the cannon went off. The reenactors are very nice and helpful. They know a tremendous amount about the history of Fort Atkinson. They do this the first weekend of every month and it is well worth the visit. I particularly liked watching the lady making thread in the library. I enjoyed seeing how the soldiers lived in the day. My friends and I had a thoroughly enjoyable time. I recommend this place to anybody who wants to know what our history was all about.

Went for a hike but the trail is closed due to flooding. Took a walk around, all alone out here, and found my hair standing up. It was quite eerie and surprising!

This seems to be a place very few people know about, but in 1820 this was the largest military installation west of the Mississippi. One 4th of the entire US Army was posted here and it was abandoned once the defense of the fur trade was no longer needed.

An exceptional experience all around! The dedicated, knowledgeable volunteers (only on the first weekend of the month, seasonally, including weekends where one month ends and the next begins (e.g., 31-1) and authentic-looking grounds offer visitors a near-firsthand look at frontier fort life. Parking and access are easy, but shade is scarce except inside the display rooms and under shade trees outside the fort.

Fort Atkinson is wonderful. This is one of the most interesting and fun historical sites in the Omaha area. The fort has been largely rebuilt following a lot of the original design and style. The best part about it is the "Living History" weekends that they do during the summer. On the first weekend of each Month (May through October) there are reenactment specialists and craftsmen who stay at the fort and provide displays, historical information, and a really fun experience. It's a wonderful experience and really great for children.
