An environmental research institution with a focus on ocean microplastic pollution with its own zero waste shop called BYO Long Beach. Fun fact: Plastic pollution is the biggest continuous form of solid oil spill and gas leak! There is no place on earth including the deepest ocean trenches, the atmosphere, and even space and that aren't touched by plastics. Therefore, plastic production, consumption, disposal are a cause of climate change and various other problems that affect all earthlings, though unequally due to environmental injustice and speciesism, including microbial life and potentially aliens because of the space junk we left in space, on the Moon, and on other planets, in our quest to colonize our solar system. Another fun fact: NASA astronauts left their gut microbiome (poop) in plastic bags on the Moon and in space so those microscopic critters are technically aliens if they've evolved. In theory, this could mean our common ancestor was dumped here on Earth by highly advanced alien astronauts who didn't completely sanitize their stuff or those microbes could've hitched a ride on space rocks that crash landed on Earth. In fact, there could be microbes on Mars right now if we look close enough. I'm gonna stop at that before this review turns into an episode of Ancient Aliens.

A magnificent store to get your stuff! Don’t waste money elsewhere. Support this location and buy incredible items. You can also come and refill your glass bottles for hygiene and personal care products. I have bought handmade minimal sea glass bracelets here, plus kitchen cleaning items, soaps, etc. It’s amazing and the cashiers and employees are volunteer or helpers with an incredible amount of knowledge to help conserve foe your life and help protect our oceans!!

Algalita is a pioneer organization in ocean plastic pollution, I really admire their hard work in the research and promoting reducing plastic movement locally and internationally, they also have lots of workshops and beach cleaning events. Plastic alternative products and BYO shop is offered here, as well as you can bring your non-recyclables to the Terracycle bin to this location. Awesome place!

The first org to tackle plastic pollution and probably still the best! They have a store with BYO Long Beach which has personal care and cleaning product refills and other plastic minimal products. They do free monthly bay cleanups, quarterly beach cleanups, screen movies, give presentations, host workshops AND do actual research on plastic pollution too!
