This school truly is an unfortunate example of toxic authoritative culture and being a student here was a saddening experience with the exception of the excellent theater department. I had notes left on my truck with threats to slash my tires for not adhering to the unwritten rules among certain students who claim parking spots, not allowing anyone else to park in them. When I contacted the administration about the threat, they said they couldn't do anything
When I went here, the principal, Mr. Bowman, would stand outside the front office running his eyes up and down the students' bodies, looking for dress code infractions. On more than one occasion, he would publicly humiliate the students, especially girls, because he believed their shorts were too suggestive and accentuated the butt area. He would tell the girls, "I can see your butt hanging out". I spent much of my time as a student here wondering why my principal was checking out underage girls' butts.
The school mascot is a racially insensitive "Indian", and is an offensive portrayal of an antiquated idea straight out of the fifties as to what an Indigenous person looks like. The mascot costume is a person wearing a large styrofoam "Indian" head with braids, feathers, with a large, goofy grin.
When my siblings went here, they withstood brutal bullying and harassment. When my mother addressed the issue with the administration, they told her that they wouldn't do anything about the physical assaults or bullying, and that if my mom didn't like the school, that she "is free to take [her] kids someplace else."
My very first week here, another girl threatened me with violence, telling me after I disagreed with her opinion, she said "I'm gonna cut you, b***h". I went home in tears, and my mother called the Buhl police department, and filed a report that I was being threatened with physical violence at school.
I don't recommend this school in any sense, and the people in Buhl should assess their schools' culture against other public school districts and make serious changes, including how the administration handles complaints of violence against their students.
