One of my favorite things about history is there's always something new to learn, such as learning there were WW2 POW camps in areas you've driven through for years. I had a great experience visiting Camp Hearne and walking through the museum section and trails. I gained alot of knowledge and appreciation for this time period and history.

If you plan on walking the trials be advised of previous weather conditions as it may limit your experience. When I walked them it was very muddy in spots, pools of water on the trails, and broken trees blocking the paths. I pushed through regardless but even for me there was a couple spots that conditions caused a challenge.

I would definitely come back whenever I visit the area and recommend anyone interested in history to do the same.

Loved being here and learning and teaching history myself. As a Reenactor, you learn what the Homefront was like and how the Germans from the Mediterranean front was going through. The museum staff was very nice too.

The Camp Hearne WWII POW museum has the potential to be a world class site and a solid draw for the town of Hearne. The museum is a work in progress and tells a fascinating story of Texas and global history. Some of Erwin Rommels Afrika Corps were here. The collection is simple, but good. The trails to see the overgrown camps are basic, yet also good. I give it a five because the site has global impact, they are just getting started with the museum and the staff are knowledgeable and truly helpful. Only 30 mins from College Station. Plan a 2-3 hour visit to see the collection, talk with the staff and hike on the trails.

Camp Hearne sheds light on a unique, interesting, and often overlooked aspect of World War II history, the prisoner of war camps in the US. Camp Hearne housed up to 4,700+ prisoners at its peak. It's prisoners we're largely from Germany's Afrika Korps, but it also housed other German soldiers, Italian soldiers, and Japanese soldiers. The Camp was open from 1943-1946. While interned, prisoners created a numerous and varied works of art including plays, fountains, paintings, sculptures, and, carvings. Many of the original works and their remains can be viewed at the site.

Interesting that Camp Hearne was a WWII POW camp. I saw the foundations on the ground for the living quarters.
