Our family is pretty new to the area and have been here almost two years now. We have a child in fourth grade at one of the elementary schools in the district. As a parent I cannot believe that there isn’t more reviews/or complaints about how the district handles internet use within the classrooms. Perhaps parents don’t know?! Our kids know that even if a teacher allows them free time on the internet they are not allowed to do anything but school specific approved apps.
About a month ago our fourth grader confided in us, she told us about things going on in her classroom, the teacher allows free time and the students go on YouTube, on their individual computers. My daughter stated that one boy showed her a video of a woman in an inappropriate swimsuit being spanked with a paddle. She also told us of another little girl in the class listening to music about suicide. We talked to the principal and the teacher. The teacher tried to tell me that it was “just” a women’s underwear add and she can’t help it if that comes up on the computers. Are we so desensitized that we are now promoting this as “normal” for our kids in the school classroom? First off there are so many things wrong with this situation!!! Number one, WHY THE HECK IS A FOURTH GRADE TEACHER ALLOWING A BUNCH OF 10 YEAR OLDS ON YOUTUBE UNSUPERVISED?! We all know filters don’t really work! We need to follow up with the principal again but our daughter let us know that today they had a sub and the sub let the kids do what they wanted on YouTube. I honestly don’t think anything is going to change on this just from the teachers attitude alone. I decided to go “higher up the ladder” with my concerns.

I thought for sure our district had higher standards so you can imagine my surprise when I spoke with Angie at the district office and she told me it’s up to each schools principal to create and enforce guidelines. I told her I was disgusted and that was an extremely poor excuse. She referred me to filing a complaint with the superintendent. I said I would but I asked her specifically since she’s over this area if she’d help me get the district to make changes-she basically told me that’s what she was doing by telling me to file a complaint with the superintendent.

So sadly enough the district is not taking the opportunity to educate and encourage appropriate use of technology. How this isn’t a bigger issue I will never understand. If there are other parents out there with similar stories please DO SOMETHING to encourage the district to make changes-the teachers should have some fast and hard rules on what is appropriate for free time and what isn’t. We are not protecting our kids. My 10 year old should never be exposed to pornographic images or songs about wanting to commit suicide in her school classroom. Others may believe “that’s just the way it is” but I refuse that low of standards from our teachers and our district leaders.
