I feel it’s important to share my deeply disappointing experience at the IHS homeless shelter, as it raises several serious concerns.

First and foremost, the presence of bedbugs made my stay uncomfortable and concerning. For anyone seeking shelter, a clean and safe environment should be a priority, and this issue needs immediate attention.

I was also surprised to find that the shelter charges for a bed. For individuals and families in crisis, this financial burden feels counterintuitive and only adds to the stress of an already challenging situation.

The behavior of some employees was particularly disheartening. I encountered instances of unkindness and a lack of empathy, which created an unwelcoming atmosphere. It was evident that favoritism existed among staff, leading to unequal treatment of residents, which only exacerbated feelings of isolation.

A major issue was the handling of personal belongings. Employees would "confiscate" clothing and other items, and if you couldn't retrieve them due to scheduling conflicts, they would throw them away. Additionally, I witnessed employees searching through confiscated belongings, keeping what they wanted and discarding the rest. Accessing the back area, where donated items are kept, was also difficult, making it a struggle to get essential items for daily living.

Overall, it’s hard to make progress when you’re treated like dirt. My experience at the IHS homeless shelter was incredibly disappointing, and I hope that these issues can be addressed to create a more supportive and respectful environment for all residents.

First of all if you are thinking about moving from Hawaii from the mainland don't do it!!! I spent all evening walking up and down the slums of Honolulu where I was almost robbed twice. The shelter is ran down and houses people deep in addiction. It looks like a prison dormitory. But the staff and their attitude towards me was off the wall. This place is a third world country man.

Rude. Nasty. Slam a flap in your face. Unresponsive. Waste of gimme. These people could care less about anything except being in control of someone else. Just a power trip all together. As if life isn't difficult enough let's go somewhere so someone else can beat us down. I think not. God bless you guys you're going to need it

Everything is band-aid and budget. Just to make things appear/ look good. While the top, who's not even on thr front line doing action, is making 6 figures. At the end of the day you made the facility a little better with bubble gum and duck tape. By pass serious matters.

I’m great full for IHS the staff is amazing they make the environment feel like you are part of the family. They are caring, the community within the walls of IHS are a diverse ethnicity and you become part of an experience of learning from one another, from food to clothing to languages. You feel it a safe place to lay your head take a shower and you have meals served all day and snacks people give donations and the staff give the to the residents. When your journey ends and it’s time to move on you receive assistance beyond your stay at IHS and that make life a whole lot easier when a care team has your back you don’t feel alone or intimidated with starting over because they don’t just see you leave and then you done with services. That means a whole lot to everyone. Thank you IHS…May god continue to bless this Shelter and it’s Staff and Affiliates and contributors. It’s people like you who makes the world go round.

Newly extended rest pass means can sleep in late till 11:00 till further notice. Staff are friendly and helpful calld me by name even though not introduced yet. A few mentally disabled residents but most residents are friendly and social. 3 hots meals and hot shower can't beat that.
