Arrived to the grassy parking lot of YMCA. The women at the front desk were very friendly and helped us get day passes ($15 each), monthly it’s $40 which is not bad. There was adequate amount of equipment and cardio. There were bathrooms for men and women and lockers through the gym area. They have classes available for people to take and they even have a water bottle station which is a big upside!! Did not mind it here because it’s friendly and pretty clean.

I just moved here from California and I Love💕💕💕🌺🌺🌺 it here. The staff is Super Nice and Helpful… I appreciate that the gym and restrooms are always clean and the YMCA members are respectful of each other’s space in the gym . When I said the staff is helpful I truly meant that. The staff member in the photo is helping a new YMCA member and he found my workout band. Thank You All for such a wonderful environment💕💕💕😌😌😌

Very very nice staff and the gym got everything you need. Got a one day pass and would defo get a membership if I lived on the island.

I just became a member at this YMCA, and I was kicked out within a month, the reasonings why, well because my my group of youth accidentally miss used equipment. when we asked what we did wrong, they could not tell us what we did wrong. So me and my whole group got kicked out because of this. I was also GRABBED by one of the staffs (manager) and yelled at; I have seen this happen to other people in the gym also. The staff have no respect for personal space and boundaries. I would not recommend this gym because the staff do not know what they are doing. Especially if you are a youth they will take a vantage of you. also, the gym equipment and everything in there is not very nice It’s honestly pretty gross. Go somewhere else~

If you’re a young Christian teen that wants to grow and learn how to exercise in a good welcoming environment, then the big island YMCA is not for you. They will rudely approach you if one complaint comes in about you and they won’t give you any reasoning to why. They do not prioritize the youth there they’d rather yell at the youth who are just trying to learn. They will physically touch you, they will bash on you, and they will watch you for your entire workout session obsessively. They terminated 6 people in our group with no explanation why and one warning. They couldn’t even tell us how to improve or what we were doing wrong. We feel strongly attacked and violated by the way they had handled everything, and we strongly believe that part of the cause was racism.

Locals only and threatened to call the police on us.

My son and I were visiting from out of state. We asked to use the treadmill and showers. We were told by the CEO of this ymca that if while we showered, the locals needed the shower, they would kick us out of the shower so that the locals could use it to allow the locals to maintain their daily routine. What?! But Ok? that was crazy but I brushed that off.

She said we could still come in if we were members at another ymca. So i bought a membership pass in my home town (which was cheaper) so we could continue going to the ymca when our vacation ended and she refused to let us in. The CEO’s reasoning was that our ymca membership was from out of state and her employee that could verify my status was unavailable at the time. Yeah, nobody else could call? (I’m In shock again but ok) She cut me off and said “I don’t have time for this this is a waste of my time” and she closed the door on us.

We walked down the hall to call my wife in shock. As I was speaking to my wife the CEO approached us again and told us if we didn’t leave she would call the police! (I was respectful, kind, and shocked. She was bitter, short tempered and discriminatory.

I’ve never had a customer service experience this bad before. Granted, she’s an older average height for a woman and I’ll a 6’4” male so I can be intimidating but my demeanor was very calm and understanding.

Maybe she was having a bad day? A REALLY bad day? The other employees were SOOOO NICE! but the boss clearly did not like outsiders and isn’t afraid to show it. We found another place to exercise but I feel sad for her.

If you live in Hilo it’s probably ok to go here. If you’re visiting good luck getting past “customs”.

We sent our 6 year old for their summer program. We ended up pulling him out. They had a list of activities on a calendar and did not do much of what was advertised. Mostly they just put them in front of the T.V. When we dropped off and picked up our child the T.V. was on and blaring with kids in front of it like zombies. No staff person came out to greet our child. There were some young adults who were supervision but on their phones instead of engaging with the kids. Our child went to coconut island on a field trip and our friend was there by coincidence and said she saw that our son was not being watched and ended up watching him until the group left. Also, she overheard that they lost one of the students and were relieved when that student showed up. Poor supervision, no engagement, no education. Do not send your child here!
