Scouting is an excellent way for youth to learn leadership skills, safety and survival skills and have lots of outdoor fun. Both my boys earned Eagle Scout rank and have had opportunities in College enrollment and Jobs that I believe they would not have if Eagle wasn't on their applications. Scouting is fun for the family and you can join at anytime between the ages of 5-21.

I'm very happy with my experience with the Scouting program put on by the Long Beach Area Council and I would recommend it to all parents. They start out as kids in Cub Scouts, learning some fun things, and then move on to the Big Leagues in the Boy Scouts. My involvement really began at that point.
When we started, my son and I were both impressed by the older scouts who ran the troop (with guidance from the adults). There was plenty of goofing around but you could tell they were responsible kids and able to corral the group when needed. After a couple of years in the troop I could see that this was not some fluke, where we happened to have a special group of older boys when we started. I could see the boys in the middle growing into the leadership positions, followed by my own son and his group. Boys who could barely speak to an adult when they started became young men who had confidence in their abilities and confidence that the adults in the troop took them seriously and were there to help. A big part of their confidence is thanks to the lessons learned from camping out, cooking for themselves, and generally being responsible for how things turned out.
This doesn't happen by magic, though. Adult guidance is a key to getting the most out of the experience. The more parental involvement there is, the more the child will get out of it. It doesn't require a lot of effort, everyone can contribute in their own way. I was surprised to find that I learned things and expanded my own capabilities in the work that I did for the troop.
My son ended up earning the Eagle rank and that's something we're all proud of. The fact that he saw I was there, putting my time in with him and the troop, only makes it better.
