The Museum of the San Rafael in Castle Dale, Utah, is a hidden gem of the San Rafael Swell, offering a fascinating journey through the region’s natural and cultural history. Highlights include well-preserved dinosaur fossils, Native American artifacts (notably from the Fremont people), and exhibits on local geology.
The museum’s offers diverse and informative displays, which include taxidermy dioramas and insights into historical trade routes like the Old Spanish Trail. The museum is accessible, family-friendly, and affordable, with admission fees ranging from $2 to $5. Open Tuesday through Saturday, it’s a must-visit for anyone exploring central Utah.

Used to be free! Probably still worth the admission, at least to visit once. Nice museum with three parts - pioneer era stuff, archaeological stuff, and paleontology stuff. As someone who loves the topic of paleontology, this section of their museum needs help from real paleontologists. Their ceratopsian is mislabeled, for example. We thought the museum overall though was really nice and clean and dust-free. Archaeology ended up being my favorite section.

Incredible Museum in a small town. The staff was very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. If you are traveling through this area you should really stop in if you are interested in the Fremont culture. Excellent display of artifacts relating to the Fremont people. They also had an excellent display of local wildlife and a small dinosaur display. There was also a display of items from the earlier history of the town.

What a treasure in Castle Dale, Utah! A museum that has it all to educate you about the area: geology, dinosaurs, wildlife (replete with mounted animals in an appropriate setting with a terrific. Utah fine by a local set of artists), biology and botany, Indigenous and ancient history, and local culture and geology.set in two main rooms, one devoted to dinosaur bones dug from the area, and the other, well, everything else, you can wander, read, look, think about Time and history and the Earth, and people and creatures long gone….and one never feels rushed or overwhelmed or bored. It is a terrific place with a wonderful vision that came together by and from the community and the Pride of Place shows. Go, you won’t regret it.

For being a smaller museum they had some cool and neat stuff. The pioneer exhibit and the dinosaur exhibit were my favorite and were really great! I do think the price is a little high for the area but it's still not bad

A really nice museum with very friendly, helpful staff. Our whole family had lots of fun. My 5 year old is the dinosaur and rock/mineral fan,but we had a lot of fun seeing every exhibit. I'd say the animals and the native american timeline was my favorite part. The gift shop was also fun, lots of neat stuff.

Easily accessible with good parking. I've been dropping into this museum for nearly 2 decades and while it's changed it hasn't. Friendly staff and interesting exhibits have always been the norm here. Yes, it's small and it won't take up a whole day to see everything, but it really shouldn't be missed. Focused on local animals, local minerals and the native people with a room full of dinosaurs as well. It's a fun time for the whole family.

The Museum of the San Rafael is surprisingly large and full of beautiful artifacts you will not see in other museums. There are three display halls, paleontology, Archaeology mixed with biology and geology, and a pioneer/historic hall. There is even a kids area where kids can play in the sand and dig up dinosaurs. The restrooms are clean and the staff is knowledgeable.
