A PLACE WHERE EVERYONE DOESN'T KNOW YOUR NAME !!! I've been a member for 26 months and spent over $900 at this YMCA. The front desk crew does not greet me when I come in the door and they mumble "Have a good one" when I leave! I don't know if it is because I'm old or slightly crippled due to lack of cartilage in my knees. Maybe it is due to both of my "maladies." I do know that they avert their eyes and look down at the floor in order to ignore me. This is not the main reason I'm quitting the Y.

NO COURTESY FOR OLD MEN!!

(1) The senior rate for me is $20 more per month than the regular rate at another nearby gym. This is my main reason for switching out.
(2) Families get better deals than single people at the Y.
(3)Age prejudice. The Y has a small bookcase that offers donated free books to the members. I brought in three DVDs of Academy Award winning films that I wanted to donate. The male supervisor treated me like I was dumping off "toxic waste." I know that they are being phased out but plenty of folks can still play DVDs!
(4) I use the assisted chin up machine at the Y. Their machine is old and in need of lubrication. I asked the same male supervisor if he could grease the machine. He nodded and said he would look into it. He never did!

MY STORY!!

At 67 I climbed Kilimanjaro (19,300 ft). My resting heart rate was 72 bpm and blood oxygen level was 80 %. I'm 83 now and I am able to do 12,000 ft lbs of work in 30 minutes on the Y's assisted chin up machine (which needs repair). At my new gym I can do 18,600 ft lbs in 30 minutes on their new machine!! Essentially I can hoist 30 lbs more per rep !!! Better machines at $20 less per month.

On January 27,2025 I went to the front desk to say I was quitting the YMCA. They told me that I needed to tell them by January 25,2025. Since I was two days late I would HAVE TO PAY FOR THE ENTIRE MONTH OF FEBRUARY !!! Even though I will not use the facilities. Apparently this is a clause in their membership contract. WHAT A RIP OFF!

Great staff, everyone is always so nice. They are very active in the Orcutt/Santa Maria community and support great causes. Clean facility and a great sense of community here!

Machines constantly out of order or needing maintenance. Not cleaned often enough areas in the gym dusty. Employees lacking custom service experience.

My Husband and I have so much good feeling toward the staff at the YMCA. With Aida and Sam greeting us and helping us set up our appointments. Cruz who we see working out the members, and Joaquin who works around the grounds. They make us feel welcome and we enjoy coming to the Y. Thank you for making it such a memorable experience.

The staff is so friendly and very enduring to the members . Been a member since 2005 and will continue to as long as I’m living in Santa Maria . One of my favorite people is Aida but all are wonderful !

The YMCA feels more like a warm community than any other gym I have worked with. It’s great to see familiar faces each day. Great job!!!
