Attending Texas Coffee School was inspiring. This isn’t just a coffee school—it’s a comprehensive journey into the art, science, and business of coffee. Whether you’re new to the industry or already have some experience, this training equips you with everything you need to succeed. Here’s a breakdown of my experience:

Day 1: Building the Foundation: history of coffee and espresso machines, mechanics of espresso machines (dual boilers, pressure profiling, etc.), types of machines, the importance of grinders (flat burrs vs. conical burrs), and how heat, grind size, and tamping influence the perfect espresso. The hands-on practice really drove home the importance of process and precision. It was eye-opening to learn how subtle changes in water temperature, pressure, or brew ratio can drastically impact flavor.

Day 2: Coffee Science and Brewing: The anatomy of the coffee cherry and its journey from farm to cup, understanding the coffee belt and how climate, altitude and soil affect flavor, different coffee trees including varietals and cultivars, processing methods and how they influence taste

We spent time learning the six essential elements of a quality brew with tasting exercises which were particularly valuable.

Day 3: Business Strategy and Vision: the business of coffee, defining vision and values, discussing a business plan, menu design, financial planning, tea integration, layout, equipment, vendors, etc. The agenda was packed, but every moment was insightful. The instructors were knowledgeable, passionate, and approachable, providing actionable advice and real-world examples.
