The YAO has taught me about what it takes to become a professional at any craft. Through dedicated rehearsals and sectionals with well-known Las Vegas musicians, I have had the honor of studying violin for two seasons under this brilliant group. All of the piece selections (such as Swan Lake and Rachmaninoff: Piano Concerto) are made with the overarching purpose of having both the audience and musicians immersed into the story of music. Conductor Yunior Lopez always brings his passion to each rehearsal, and that translates immensely into the essence of the orchestra. The YAO has high and mature expectations for its students, so the performances never disappoint. I would definitely recommend listening to our performances or, better yet, attending one of our live concerts (when the time is right)!

I am part of a group of local women who donate to a charity, person or group of our choice every month. Recently, one of the group members choose YAO. (She is a member of their board.) And I can see why! I had no idea we had such an amazing group of young school age talent in our midst. The musicians in the Bridgerton concert I attended were truly incredible. Having never watched the show, each song was introduced sharing tidbits of the circumstances surrounding it. The Windmill Library was a first for me as well, and the theatre provided an intimate hour of wonderful entertainment. The musicians and music were so memorable that I returned home and had Alexa play the music from Bridgerton for a week straight. And now I have been enjoying my evenings watching the series. Best of luck YAO. I am proud of you too!

YAO has helped me to grow as a musician and get experience to work with professionals and able to learn from them as well. Our performances are INCREDIBLE! Through working all the pieces and meeting new people, it has made this experience that you can’t even stop doing it. If you really love music, I would recommend auditioning and come to our concerts.

Honestly I am at a lost for words with this group, it is everything you can ask for. From the professionalism of the orchestra, level of music, and opportunities with features artists. I remember my first year with this group which was the Danse Macabre concert. The concert was a very impactful factor of my violin playing. I told myself: “Wow I can’t believe I just played that! I need to get better” especially when seeing the musicianship and level of the orchestra. This orchestra gives so much opportunities to young artists who want to grow with their music. I definitely did thanks to the help of many of the mentors such as Yunior, Yuri, and Susan. Their advice really makes you think and improve your rough areas. I am currently at about my 4th year with this orchestra and I plan in staying as long as I can. My favorite concerts definitely have to be the danzón and the west side story concert. They were so fun to play! The west side story was the first time that the YAO had played in the Smith center. The experience of hearing all those applauses and cheers at the end of the music was phenomenal, it doubled as another factor to improve even more. So long story short, if you are an inspiring young artist who wants to grow more musically, audition! You don’t regret it, I definitely didn’t.

I joined this orchestra as a horn player two years ago and am entering my third season. It is safe to say I have absolutely no regrets. Rehearsing with the orchestra every Friday is the highlight of my week. The director, musicians, and the music presented are all top notch. One thing I really like about being in this orchestra is that everybody in there is treated like professionals and are expected to do their best. If you have to opportunity to do so, I highly recommend joining the orchestra, as well as checking out the concerts.

I have really enjoyed my time with YAO the last four years I have been fortunate enough to participate in it. The orchestra plays a variety of music which has been one of my favorite parts of YAO because you never get tired of it. The music is challenging but attainable if you work hard. I love how every year there is one grand performance consisting of more pop-culture based music (Star Wars, West Side Story, Harry Potter). Performing at the Smiths Center was quite an experience, and it is a disappointment that in the development of a pandemic, COVID-19, I was unable to have my last performance with the orchestra there. Having the opportunity to perform in such a beautiful concert hall is an experience I will never forget. The instructors and guest artists that I have had the opportunity to play with have all been exceptional. But in all, Yunior and Kerry, the orchestra directors, are the best part of YAO. They are never afraid to tell you what you are doing wrong, and for some of the newbies to the program, that may be intimidating at first, but that is what has helped me grow. I have been apart of YAO since the establishment of the Academy Program and I have certainly seen it grow. I undoubtedly enjoyed my last four years in YAO and now that I have left for college, it leaves a bittersweet taste in my mouth because I am sad to leave, but excited to see how the program will grow.

The Young Artists Orchestra is a amazing musical experience. Having played in the orchestra and attended many of the concerts I can confidently say it is one of the best ensembles in Vegas. I’m always looking forward to Friday when I get to go and make great music with great people. The instruction that YAO students receive is top notch. Because of this orchestra I’ve had to the opportunity to play some of the most amazing music with some of the greatest musicians in the country. The experiences I’ve had in YAO have been truly indispensable and the things I’ve learned will continue to help me through the rest of my musical career.

YAO is very well organized and gives every section a good challenge in their music and the concerts are always very well prepared for. The past season has been a great experience for me, and for a lot of others I know in the orchestra. I have no doubt that this season has many great things in store.
